What is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection also known as herpes zoster or varicella zoster. Shingles is more common among people over the age of 60 but can occur in people of all ages. The virus remains dormant in the body until it is aggravated in later life in a virus known as shingles. It is thought to be a weakened immune system that brings out the virus in later life.

Inital symptoms include numbness under the skin, burning, itching, redness, and pain on one side of the body. After a few days this will lead to clear, fluid filled blisters surrounded by a rash. The virus follows nerve's and are often found in lines. As human eyes are connected to nerves this can result in painful eye inflammations and infections.

Early diagnosis and treatment is necessary to reduce the symptoms which may cause complications to vision. Someone infected with shingles can transmit chickenpox to a person who has never had the virus. Infection occurs through both direct and indirect contact (eg. a towel) with the fluid from the blister. Someone infected with shingles should avoid contact with children and adults who have never had chickenpox until the blisters have healed. Anyone can get shingles if they have had chicken pox but it is more likely to occur in older people.

What is Chicken Pox?

Chicken pox is a common disease caused by the varicella zoster virus which is a member of the herpes virus family. It is very contagious and usually occurs during childhood. Adults can get chicken pox if they did not have it in childhood.

Chicken pox most often begins with a slight fever, body aches and loss of appetite. Within 1-2 days, the rash appears usually starting on the back or chest. Initially chicken pox begins as red spots and develops into a rash which then rapidly form blisters and spreads to the rest of the body. The blisters open and form a crust or scab within a few days. The chicken pox rash can continue to break out for 4-5 days as older lesions crust and heal. Itching can accompany the rash along with fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat and general body aches. It is unusual to have chicken pox more than once.

Chicken pox is extremely contagious and is spread by contact with fluid in the blisters and by airborne droplets that are inhaled. Incubation period is 7-21 days. A person who has the virus is contagious from 1-2 days before the chicken pox rash appears and until all the lesions form crusts.

To relieve the symptoms of chicken pox, antihistamines or baths with colloidal oatmeal may help relieve itching. Tylenol or ibuprofen is used for fever or pain relief. Aspirin should be avoided. Doctor's advice should be sought.
